Gene The Southern Child – “Smackman”

Adult Swim-affiliated rapper Gene The Southern Child hails from Florence, Alabama, minutes from legendary music hub Muscle Shoals and about an hour from Huntsville, the hip-hop hotbed that yielded G-Side, Jackie Chain, and Paper Route Gangstaz. This summer he’ll release a full-length called Southern Meridian produced entirely by his longtime collaborator, New Jersey beat-maker Parallel Thought. Lead single “Smackman” sets Gene’s agile drawl against ominous bleeps, thumps, pops, snaps, and scratches, an ideal setting for the effortlessly flowing MC to dress down a wannabe gangsta.
