GMANE & DJ BURN ONE.."SUNDAY ON DA PORCH"

Photobucket

WRITE UP BY CODIE G

It had to be about 96 or 97 when I was up on the yard going to Alabama A&M University. There was an urban clothing store that sat off in the cut over by G’s Country Kitchen, behind the old Top Line tires where CVS is now located. I was going to cop some new DADA Supreme shirts and some Delinquents shirts. I think the guy that was running the store was from Jersey. You could get all the good reading material like Niggas to Gods, the Willie Lynch Speech, and Soul on Ice by Eldredge Cleaver. I’m talking about a black man’s heaven here. I go to the counter to purchase my vintage North side survival kit of aforementioned items when the Slave Kamp cd jumped out at me. It read “Alabama’s Most controversial Rap Group”. So it too was added to my group of purchases. I heard tales of the southern backwoods that didn’t seem like the normal rap coming out at that time. It was more country, more basement than a wine cellar, but all the time it was Alabama Hip Hop. My potna G-Mane was part of that group. To see him still putting it down for the Flo is remarkable. Florence is somewhat of a ghost town from what it was a decade ago. You had police operations like “Copy Cat” that took almost 100 people from a neighborhood to state pens; helicopters and special ops repelling into the neighborhood, and national guard troops patrolling the streets. Crack was a commodity and the hustlers weren’t scared to move it. You had the murder of Chris Stanback that went unsolved and tore a community apart. The West Side and East Side lost businesses, so now a drive down Mobile Street is accompanied by the sounds of the souls which once made the street vibrant and the heart of the culture. I have sat in on some of the sessions for this project and I’m proud to have the access I have acquired to see this project come together. Sunday on Da Porch is from some one who has survived the Shoal’s decadent 90’s to school the younger generations on a time when hustlers chilled out for a Sunday on the Porch. Production by Mick Vegas.

G SIDE.. HUNTSVILLE INTERNATIONAL

Photobucket

“Huntsville is so fuckin international, shoulda been Alabama’s capital, that’s trill talk”
- ST 2 Lettaz from ‘Rising Sun’

This is it.

Huntsville International has landed.

If you don’t know by now from the countless classics we’ve published here at Southern Hospitality: Huntsville, Alabama’s Slow Motion Soundz camp is producing, has produced and we’d bet our collective houses will continue to produce, some of the most exciting, heartfelt and, most crucially, musical music of any city, state, country and genre of music. Categorising what these artists do as rap music or hip-hop simply will not stand. This is music, pure and simple. This is some of our all-time favourite music.

What separates G-Side members ST 2 Lettaz and Yung Clova from any other rap duo doing it in recent history, is their outwardly humble aura, understated and yet emotionally articulated rhymes, which are a living, breathing commitment to staying true to their reality. That reality being life in Huntsville. A city that, as a direct result of Slow Motion Soundz’ guiding light, Codie G, will now rise up. The result? The space rocket in their back yard should offer a clue.

The Block Beattaz production (not forgetting Mick Vegas and PT’s sterling work on here also) maintains an otherworldly, space age feel to express through the music what heights the SMS family hope to reach, while all the while ST and Clova’s words keep everything grounded. Grounded in the history of their forefathers in the infamously oppressed and segregated state of Alabama, in their position at the forefront of a city and state that has yet to break into the scene-centred rap universe’s consciousness, and in their own powerful sense of self.

The music peaks when aspirational emotions run high (”It’s kinda hard coming out of Alabama/You don’t realise you slow till you outta Alabama“), but every moment is so intricately produced and Crimson Tide stadium pitch earthy, and yet still not of this world, that the listener can truly feel like they’re experiencing something unique and special – not unlike the first time you heard Big Boi and Dre trade futuristic mystics or Bun B and Pimp C inject their souls into the south’s collective hearts and minds.

‘Huntsville International’, available free copy and paste link below, has been many months in the making, has hit some turbulence, but is all the better for it. And let it be known that this is the beginning of ST and Clova’s future as global artists, setting trends in hip-hop and beyond, and doing shows internationally. Next stop London and Amsterdam!!!

Now we proudly present to you the album, and it is an album, we’ve been anticipating for what feels like a lifetime. Feel this…

TAM-TAM & 6 TRE G "U BOPn"

All you need to know about Tam Tam (www.twitter.com/tamtam256) is that, apart from holding it down for Alabama for years now, she inspired Codie G, the man spearheading the great music movement in Huntsville, to get in the game in the first place. So peep this new track from Tam Tam and Jive signee 6 Tre Gangsta for a prime example of that Huntsvegas heat! Enjoy!
